Aceh’s Shariah Police ‘Stained Forever’ by Gang Rape

Banda Aceh. Having gang-raped and tortured a female student at the Langsa Shariah Police station in Aceh, the three officers responsible have forever blackened the name of the religious police as upholders of Islamic law, Aceh’s Shariah Police deputy commander said on Wednesday.

“We are enraged by this. We are ashamed by their actions. The shock is still there. The actions of these three individuals have marred the image of Shariah Police in the eyes of the Acehnese forever,” Syarifuddin told The Jakarta Globe.

“They should have been role models for upholding Islamic law but their actions did not in any way reflect the behavior of men of honor,” he added.

Police have arrested two of the alleged rapists, members of the Wilayatul Hisbah or Shariah Police, and are tracking down a third officer, who has already been declared a suspect.

The three officers had allegedly taken turns raping a 20-year-old student in a police detention cell in the early hours of Friday morning. Friday is considered “a day of goodness” in Islam and afternoon prayers on Friday are mandatory for Muslims.

The two officers in custody, identified only by their initials as FA, 28, and MN, 29, continue to be questioned over the “arrest” of the university student.

The victim was taken into custody for allegedly engaging in an immoral act with her boyfriend on Jalan Lingkar, near the PTPN-I Langsa ring road. Both the girl and her boyfriend were brought in by police and questioned over the alleged violation of the Shariah Public Indecency Law 2003.

“There is a manhunt across Aceh for the third suspect,” Langsa Police Chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Yosi Muhammartha said.

He said the three officers under suspicion had been hired on a contract basis.

A medical examination confirmed that the victim had been grievously sexually assaulted and that she had suffered a severe hemorrhage as a result of the rape.

“This is now a top priority case for us, considering that the suspects have completely humiliated the Shariah Police,” Yosi said.

Syarifuddin added that the authority of the provincial Shariah Police was restricted to coordination alone and that police at the district and community levels acted of their own accord.

“The individuals involved in the rape had been hired by the chief of Langsa Shariah Police, not by us at the provincial level,” he said. He insisted his office had sent recruitment guidelines to every Shariah district police precinct, which included requiring candidates to pass psychological screening and a religious knowledge test.

“But not every region abides by the rules we set up,” Syarifuddin said. He added that the recruitment process would be made more stringent in future to avoid similar incidents occurring again. “We will not intervene in the current investigations and hope that [the suspects] get heavy sentences,” he said.

In 2003, Aceh province opened its first Shariah court, which implements laws based on Islamic teachings. These laws cover almost all elements of life in the province, including obligating Muslim women to wear a jilbab.

Any Muslim who breaks these rules can be sentenced to a public caning or a fine.

These are Aceh men who think that doing shariah will keep evil away from their land. They just now to know that evil is within man's mortal heart not in aurat and the good of men is love not law.

BenJakarta - I just read your first comment here for the first time and quite frankly, I missed any element that could be construed as "funny", "mildly funny", or even "relevant".

(viz)"If this girl wants to be able to toss her hair around in public without being gang-raped by Islamic Religious Police, nobody is stopping her from moving to Canada, for instance. There are flights every day. We have rules here, just like every other country does."

Your grasp of the English language suggests that you're a native speaker. Either that, or you've certainly got a lot out of the Wiki site.

If, by stating "We have rules here...", you mean to suggest that you're a real Indonesian, you are somewhat deluded in that department. Sure, whilst there are "rules" in Indonesia, they don't work for everybody on a day to day basis, (in case you haven't noticed that).

Why doesn't the "Islamic Religious Police" catch a flight to Canada, rather than the victim of an atrocity? Australia might be a better destination - they wouldn't last very long there.

Or even better still, what about some other 15th century shit-hole country in amongst the medieval Arab nations, which too many Indonesians seem to revere based upon pure ignorance?

message lost to your own personas?

The LESSON here is the crime and our right to expose the error that is Govt enforced Shariah rules.

This is not the Indonesia we know and love. In Aceh the authorities seem to have prevailed in that the rights of the individual are less than those of the organized PACs - in this case religious hardliners.

These same hardliners refuse to allow 'conversion' and go so far as to burn churches in their centers of operations. Their agenda is to convert, and by mob force. Look at the map. Are they not now reaching outside of their national borders seeking to test their strengths and influence into OUR Indonesia. Lets see this for what it is. We have our own Constitution here. We are Indonesia, NOT Malaysia. Burning of churches? Don't even take the first step down that treacherous road of certain misery or certainly we will be Lost. We will build Our country with jobs - not mobs!. Indonesia is polytheistic, it is our strength, Our model to the world. It is the only future that is not soaked in blood. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you for Christians as we also honor Quran 4:135 ' ...while believing in Allaah and the Last Day, and do for the people what he likes them to do for him."

BenJakarta - You appear to be a man of intelligence and probably of good standing too!

To utilize your sarcasms and making a foolery of issues is something else. I for one, abhor being used and I feel there's others who feel like I do.

The very least you could do was to say "sorry guys I didn't mean to

insult your intelligence." We'd probably seek some solace there, but to carry on your views in the manner you have presented is unbecoming of a gentleman.

Bottom line BenJakarta....don't be so cocky! Once again I like to say that I dislike being used and my intelligence being insulted!

The irony of sarcasm or litotes may involve the emphasis of one's meaning by deliberate use of language that states the direct opposite of the truth.

In situational irony a certain factual truth is highlighted by some person's complete ignorance of it, or belief in the opposite of it

Wiki: Sarcasm is the rhetorical device of using a characterization of something or someone in order to express contempt.

I was using sarcasm to channel strong feelings of contempt towards Sharia's abuse of people, mostly women. Just recently they declared hair-bonding for women "haram".

How do you cope with *your* outrage and contempt? Unconsciously I try to get others to feel just as outraged - just feels right getting everybody else as outraged as I am.

Good point about the lack of tone in written speech. I could use the indication.

But again, I am afraid to use that before checking the Shariah Public Indecency Law 2003 regarding its permissibility, so please bear with me for a few days.

BenJakarta - the trouble with being 'sarcastic' - the term hardly fits your comments - is that when people take you seriously, you just might end up like poor little Matilda.

Matilda (who told such dreadful lies) by Hilaire Belloc

Matilda told such Dreadful Lies,

It made one Gasp and Stretch one’s Eyes;

Her Aunt, who, from her Earliest Youth,

Had kept a Strict Regard for Truth,

Attempted to believe Matilda:

The effort very nearly killed her,

And would have done so, had not she

Discovered this Infirmity.

For once, towards the Close of Day,

Matilda, growing tired of play,

And finding she was left to alone,

Went tiptoe to the telephone

And summoned the Immediate Aid

Of London’s Nobel Fire-Brigade.

Within an hour the Gallant Band

Were pouring in on every hand,

From Putney, Hackney Downs and Bow,

With Courage high and Hearts a-glow

They galloped, roaring though the Town,

"Matilda’s House is Burning Down"

Inspired by British Cheers and Loud

Proceeding from the Frenzied Crowd,

They ran their ladders through a score

Of windows on the Ball Room Floor;

And took Peculiar Pains to Souse

The Pictures up and down the House,

Until Matilda’s Aunt succeeded

In showing them they were not needed

And even then she had to pay

To get the Men to go away! . . . . .

It happened that a few Weeks later

Here aunt was off to the Theatre

To see that Interesting Play

The Second Mrs. Tanqueray.

She had refused to take her Niece

To hear this Entertaining Piece:

A Deprivation Just and Wise

To Punish her for Telling Lies.

That Night a Fire did break out-

You should have heard Matilda Shout!

You should have heard her Scream and Bawl,

And throw the window up and call

To People passing in the Street-

(The rapidly increasing Heat

Encouraging her to obtain

Their confidence)-but it was all in vain!

For every time She shouted "Fire!"

They only answered "Little Liar!"

And therefore when her Aunt returned,

Matilda, and the House, were burned.

BenJakarta - thanks very much for spoofing most of us.

In fact, I have already activitated my "clown unit" to search and shoot you on sight. They'll be lead by the Red and Yellow Dunce Cap units who you may recognize as top contenders for the "Indonesian Political Idol" contest. They're tough boys Ben, and they just love to crucify people, just for the fun of it. You see, my chaps lost the last contest and they're really upset about it. Please don't expect any mercy.

Sorry, I'm still not convinced you made the correct decision. I will not rest until you're destroyed!

Yes, BenJakarta was being sarcastic. Good eye, Pinko.

That way, everybody else leaps in and makes my points for me, forcefully.

Thanks go out to padt, Valkyrie, Jean Hachette, and peterR for the support.

"If this girl wants to be able to toss her hair around in public without being gang-raped by Islamic Religious Police nobody is stopping her from..."

How could you not spot that a mile away as a parody?

I doubt the bastar** did this the first time. There were certainly others who were raped! I am very certain of that.

To remove their "manhood" would be justification for those who suffered. Best and swiftest method is to just chop them off!

Do human beings progress from leading decent, law abiding lives, to gang rape in one step? Just what crimes have these animals committed previously?

Carried out whilst in detention, in an official building, can this be an isolated crime?

Can three such men just meet by accident, or is this possibly institutional behaviour?

Is Aceh's Shariah police just a bunch of sadistic animals, with no respect for woman, and a weapon to satisfy an insatiable lust for power and control?

How many more women, and men, have been abused in Aceh, but are just too frightened, or ashamed to step forward?

Should Shariah law, as imposed on the Acehnese people, be abolished and crimilised on the basis that it is discriminatory and abuses individual's basic human rights, and has no place in a modern civilised society?

BenJakarta - there is a line of moral thought which holds that masturbation is an immoral act. I may presume by your name that you are a healthy male. I wont enquire (its none of my business) if you ever masturbate. But, according to a widely held moral precept - anyone who masturbates is engaged in an immoral act.

Going on your opinions expressed openly here - that there are laws and if people disobey them and act immorally they should be punished, hence this girl (according to you) got what she deserved - do you believe that people who masturbate should be gang raped? (or punished in any other way.)

I would be interested in your answer and see whether it fits in with your line of thinking. (Presuming in a disinterested way that you yourself never indulge.)

For other readers: A good Muslim friend of mine told me recently of a hard line Muslim he knew at University who was always going around trying to convert his fellow students to his views. One day it was noticed he was absent from Friday Prayers. Inquiries were made as to his whereabouts. It was discovered that he was in his room down loading porn.

There is and always has been a a sad, destructive and sinister connection between harsh moral rectitude, abusive behaviour and religious self righteousness. It comes about as a result of the religious person not experiencing the intimacy and connectedness with God that they seek as a result of warped views of God's nature and his teachings. Their 'religion' is more about law than love. This has been going on for centuries in all religions amongst a few of their adherents. Sane people are tolerant and forgiving. Its a tragedy when religion is interpreted to condone violence - towards the body - towards the mind, towards the dignity of human beings.

In Iran at present, the Islamic police are raping (male) prisoners because they are considered disloyal to the Islamic Republic. Perhaps this kind of logic has been exported to Aceh? It's madness. No excuses can be made for it. No one has to catch a plane to anywhere.
