Indonesian Activists Deliver Notification for Anticorruption Rally to Jakarta Police
Activists from a number of non-government organizations came to the Jakarta Police Headquarters on Monday to deliver an official notification letter for a large rally planned for Wednesday to commemorate International Anti-Corruption Day.
Among the activists were the chairman of the Resurrect Indonesia Movement, Addie Masssardi, and former lawmaker Ali Muchtar Ngabalin. According to Addie, a number of public figures have confirmed their participation in the rally, such as former president Abdurrahman Wahid.
Meanwhile, National Police said they would not try to stop or prevent the rally.
“The National Police do not have any problems with the rally as long as we are notified and it is held peacefully,” intelligence and security head Insp. Gen. Saleh Saaf said on Monday.
According to Saleh, the police will monitor the rally if the participants ask for police permission.
“Freedom of speech is a citizen’s right. Go ahead but do it peacefully,” Saleh said.
