Noordin M Top Killed, Indonesian Police Chief Confirms

Noordin M Top is among the terror suspects killed in a raid overnight in Solo, Central Java, Indonesia's National Police chief Bambang Hendarso Danuri announced Thursday.

The body's fingerprint's matched Noordin's in the Malaysian National Police database, he added.

Noordin is one of the most wanted terrorists in the region. He is believed to be the mastermind of at least five terrorist attacks in Indonesia, including the Bali bombing and the attacks at two luxury hotels in Jakarta in July.

Police stormed a house on the outskirts of the city at around 7:00 a.m. after a nine-hour siege. Solo is a longtime stronghold of the Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) radical network.

Three other terror suspects were killed and three arrested in the raid. Also among the dead is Bagus Budi Pranoto or Urwah, a man wanted by police in connection with the July hotel bombings in Jakarta.

The other two killed in the raid were Hadi Susilo and Aryo Sudarsono, alias Aji.

Among the wounded was a woman named Munawaroh, who is seven months pregnant. Bambang said she was recovering at the National Police Hospital in Jakarta.

"We warned them to surrender but they didn't obey," said Bambang. "Since we knew there were dangerous people inside, we had to take strong action." He did not give a clear answer when asked whether Munawaroh or her husband, the owner of the house, were involved with terrorist activities.

He said police had been on Urwah's trail earlier in Solo, but the suspected terrorist fled after the information was leaked to the media.

Shaun:

I am seeing your drift clearly.

There is a possibility that OBL has already gone to meet his maker and that the US is keeping "mums" on this.

What happened here is an indication to terrorist that if you live with the gun you'll die with it. No quarters to be given and I wholeheartedly agree with this. Of course to apprehend them alive would be beneficial.

There will certainly be empathy towards his expiry and this is surely inevitable. I am confident that our Police have adequate information to contain the situation. They cannot afford to sit on their laurels and should be on the alert at all times.

I would like the enforcement of a "special" internal security act, primarily aimed at eradicating radicals and those who support terrorism. This is an efficient tool which is vital for our Police to have. As the saying goes....you cannot have the best of both

worlds.

Finally. The issue that is at hand before us is will the announcement of this death lead to a decrease in terrorist activity or will it create the atmosphere for a situation in which his death (through a battle with "authorities") lead to his martyrdom? The issue is one confronting the US intelligence agencies at this time: if OBL is dead do they announce that or keep him alive in "spirit" to continue to prosecute a war on terror? Did NMT's death accomplish a strategic or tactical goal or will it result in an increase in the swirling winds of terrorist empathy?
