TEDx Jakarta to Bring Together Experts and Audiences on Sunday
The second TEDx Jakarta event will take place on Sunday at Kemang Village from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., with audience members having the opportunity to learn from five Indonesians with varied interests: an urban architect, an expert in lightning, a promoter of entrepreneurship, a social researcher and a teenage prodigy researching the science of music.
The Technology and Entertainment Design group was founded in Long Beach, California, in 1984. The idea-sharing event has since expanded into the fields of art, philosophy, science, literature and more.
Independent events, taking place around the world for the first time this year, are being described as TEDx,
The original TED was known for such powerhouse speakers as Bill Gates and Al Gore. The annual TED conference has 50 speakers scheduled for this year and more than a thousand people are expected to attend.
Unlike the seven-minute Pecha Kucha speakers, people at the annual TED and offshoot TEDx events take the stage for 18 minutes. In recent years, these event have been recorded and put on the Internet so anyone can view them for free.
The three initiators of TEDx Jakarta — Karina Sigar, Arief Aziz and Kartika Anindya — hope to inspire audiences with video presentations and lectures by local presenters.
“Arief, Kartika and I have the same passion for gathering people who are thirsty for ideas and inspiration,” Karina said.
TEDx communities can be found in other Asian countries, as well as in Australia, Europe, the Middle East, Canada and the United States, where there is the largest number of communities. In Indonesia, there are communities in Jakarta, Temanggung and Bali.
The TEDx Jakarta community will also participate in an Information Communication and Technology Awards ceremony at the Jakarta Convention Center on Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and on Friday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
