Thousands Gather for Indonesia's Sky Lantern Record-Setting Attempt
Indonesia reportedly broke the world record for the most sky lanterns flown simultaneously, with more than 10,000 paper lanterns sent up into the sky on Saturday night, an Internet report said, quoting officials.
The record-breaking event, held in a field beside Carnival Beach in Ancol, North Jakarta, drew thousands of people, including foreigners, the news Web site NECN.com reported.
The event was part of the Annual Freedom Celebration, a two-day gathering organized by Freedom Faithnet Global, a firm that provides network marketing support services.
“This is basically to inspire our members all around the world that with this celebration, anything can happen. It’s basically to change their mind-set,” event chairman WS Yong was quoted as saying by the Web site.
Lucia Sinigagliesi, a representative of Guinness World Records, was present to verify the record-breaking attempt.
“We don’t yet have the final number because we are still checking on the statistics,” she said on the Web site. “But for sure, it’s beaten the previous one and its going be a number higher than 10,000 lanterns flown together.” JG
