Indonesian Mother Arrested for Pill Smuggling
A woman was arrested on Saturday for smuggling 1,000 anti-cough pills into the Cirebon Correctional Center in West Java, a prison official said.
Chief warden Nur Ahmad Santosa said they held Kartini, 42, a resident of Kebon Kelapa, Cirebon, after she visited her boyfriend, Susilo, an inmate to whom she handed a package containing the pills, known as dextromethorphan
“Although dextromethorphan is known as an anti-cough medicine, taken in large quantities, it could intoxicate the person who takes it, which might give us problems inside the prison,” Santosa said.
Kartini, who was with her two children when she made the visit, was monitored closely by prison security because she was “behaving suspiciously,” Santosa said.
Security saw Kartini motion as if she was giving something to Susilo under a table inside the visitors’ room. A warden stopped Kartini before she left the building, while Susilo was summoned.
“We did not search Kartini thoroughly at first, because we were sure she wouldn’t say to whom she was giving [the pills],” Santosa said, adding he would file a report with Cirebon Police.
Kartini told reporters that Susilo had instructed her to buy the pills, saying she complied because she thought she would be paid.
“He gave me Rp 300,000 [$31] to buy the pills, and he said I could keep the change, which was around Rp 140,000,” Kartini said.
