KPK Grills Bank Exec As Graft Witness

The Corruption Eradication Commission on Friday questioned Bank Artha Graha chief executive Andi Kasih over a corruption case linking lawmakers to the 2004 appointment of Miranda Goeltom as Bank Indonesia’s senior deputy governor.

“He was questioned as a witness,” said Johan Budi, a spokesman for the commission, which is also known as the KPK.

The investigation began last year after a former lawmaker alleged that he and other legislators at the House of Representatives were bribed to support Miranda’s candidacy for the central bank post.

Miranda, now close to the end of her term, is currently serving as the bank’s acting governor because former Bank Indonesia Governor Boediono stepped down to become President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s vice presidential running mate.

Johan said investigators from the commission asked Andi to provide more information about several former House members —Dudhie Makmun Murod, Endin Soefihara, Udju Djuhaeri and Hamka Yandhu — who are all suspects in the case.

Johan said the KPK had asked the Directorate General for Immigration and the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights to bar Andi from traveling abroad because Bank Artha Graha could also be linked to the case.

The commission on Friday also questioned former House member Udju Djuhaeri. His lawyer, Inu Kertapati, said his client was only asked questions to verify his identity.

“We did not touch on the substance of the case,” he said.

The case began with a report filed last year by former House member Agus Condro Prayitno.

Agus claimed that he received a check for Rp 500 million ($49,000) before Miranda’s election and that other House members received checks as well.
