Sustainable Construction Ideas Win Students Trip to Mexico
Two Indonesians will take part in the Global Holcim Award forum in Mexico next year after having been named winners in a sustainable construction competition.
Lin Yu Sing, 33, won the Holcim Award 2009, while Prima Wijaya, 24, won the Next Generation Award 2009.
Lin won the award with four of his colleagues for a project called “Caringin Family Village Improvement,” in a densely populated area of Bandung, West Java.
“His project shows how to give a bigger open space in a densely populated area,” said Gunawan Tjahjono, a professor of architecture from the University of Indonesia, who served as the head judge.
He added that the project addressed an actual problem faced by the government.
Lin, an architect, said the project implemented the green building concept, which reused old materials and gave more green space to houses.
Prima won for his project design titled “Pademangan Barat Garbage facility,” a land reuse concept, where buildings for waste management will be built on an old railway that is no longer used.
Judges said his design could increase the North Jakarta community’s activities to mitigate the waste problem.
The design began with his college paper before graduating from Pelita Harapan University, where he majored in architecture. “The judges thought that his project design showed sensitivity to the environment,” Gunawan said.
The two winning projects were selected from 65 entries from all over the country.
The Holcim forum is a series of symposiums on the topic of sustainable construction, according to the Web site of the Holsim Foundation, www.holsimfoundation.org.
